Top Everyday Detox Tips to Safeguard Thyroid Health

Are you worried daily exposure to harmful environmental chemicals is having a negative effect on your thyroid health?

Environmental chemicals are everywhere; in our food, water and the air we breathe. I believe these are contributing to the sharp rise in thyroid health problems. For this reason it’s vital to minimise your exposure.

Here’s 7 tips to help you get started.

Tip # 1: Eat Clean Food

Your path to better thyroid health starts with a healthy and nutritious diet. This will make a huge difference to how you feel.

Highly processed foods are extremely damaging to the thyroid. The biggest threats are sugar, soy, artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), and processed vegetab le oils such as soy and Canola oil.

Furthermore, choosing organic produce whenever possible is the way to go. The reason? Most conventionally grown fruits and vegetables these days harbour pesticide residues which contribute to chronic disease.

When given a choice more and more people are opting for organic fruits and vegetables. However, you may not always have access to organic produce, or have the shopping budget that stretches as far as only buying organic items.

Thankfully the Environmental Working Group (EWG) produce lists each year that makes selecting fruit and vegetables with lower amounts of pesticides a little easier. I suggest you use the EWG ‘Dirty Dozen’ and ‘Clean Fifteen’ lists to help you make informed choices when it comes to buying fruits and vegetables with the lowest pesticide residues.

Tip # 2: Get Green Cleaning

Household cleaning products can host an array of hazardous chemicals.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) think keeping your home clean shouldn’t be a health risk. They research and information that shines the spotlight on cleaning products.

One of the key concerns raised by the EWG is the lack of disclosure regarding the numerous ingredients found in household cleaning products. For example; a lemon fresh or pine scent isn’t necessarily healthy or natural. Fragrances are often synthetic aromas engineered by combining dozens of chemicals.

Tip # 3: Filter Your Water

Clean water is of utmost importance.

  • Use filtered water, or freshly collected spring water for cooking, and drinking.
  • Shower filters reduce exposure to fluoride, chlorine and other water impurities that are readily absorbed via the skin. You may already know chlorine and fluoride block iodine which reduces thyroid hormone activity. Chlorine is also very drying so when you shower in chlorine free water you will notice your hair becomes softer and your skins becomes more radiant.
  • I suggest you stay out of pools and spas as they contain high levels of chlorine. Aside from the adverse effects of chlorine, common disinfectant techniques lead to the formation of by-products that are far more dangerous. Tip # 4: Choose Natural Beauty Care Products

Most companies gloss over the use of chemicals in their products. This is despite the fact that hidden toxins from perfumes, cosmetics and personal care products are inhaled or absorbed rapidly and enter into the blood stream directly.

Remember…anything going on you, goes in you. Once a chemical is in the bloodstream it eventually washes through the thyroid as this gland has a rich blood supply.

Tip # 5: Make Your Home Your Health Sanctuary

Your home is your health sanctuary. Encourage a ‘shoes off at the front door’ policy to reduce the amount of dirt and toxic particles that are tracked into your home.

Replace chemical air fresheners with freshly picked flowers or mix a few drops of essential oil with water in a spray bottle and use this as a natural room deodoriser. It goes without saying that visitors should not smoke in your home.

Tip # 6: Improve Indoor Air Quality

  • Clean and vacuum regularly to remove dust and dirt that builds up indoors.
  • Use clove oil to clean bathroom areas as this helps mitigate mold. If you want to learn more about mold sensitivity I recommend you watch Moldy: The Toxic Mold Movie by Dave Asprey. It provides important insights into the topic of toxic mold illness, and how exposure to mold has become a modern day health problem.
  • If air quality is a particular concern you should consider investing in a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter to help purify the air. Some indoor plants can also help improve air quality.

Tip # 7: Reduce Exposure To Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs)

I believe this is an important issue for everyone as we are complex energy systems, and our bodies are therefore highly sensitive to EMF.

Here’s some simple tips to reduce your exposure;

  • Sleep is the time when your body heals so reducing your exposure to negative energy when asleep is particularly important. You can create an EMF-free sleep sanctuary by turning off your Wi-Fi router at night, and banning TVs, clock radios, electric blankets, gaming consoles, laptops, mobile phones, iPads, tablets, Fitbits, and all other electronic devices from your bedroom unless they are required for medical purposes.
  • Keep the time you spend on your phone to an absolute minimum. While mobile phones have become an essential part of our lives there are ways to reduce your risk of exposure to the radiation they emit. For example; when making calls use a hands-free device, text rather than making phone calls, and when you press send to send messages or emails hold your phone away from your body.
  • Shield your home from smart meters. These devices, which operate at about the same radio frequencies as mobile phones, transmit information on consumption of electricity or gas to utility companies. They produce non-ionizing radiation that penetrates the walls of your home and into your home 24/7, 365 days.
